Installation Tips

Simple Sailing... No Strings Attached

Kayak Installation

Install the sail rig in front of and within reach of the paddler, while skirted into cockpit. The kayak sailor needs to be able to grasp the battens to raise and lower the sail. Paddlers with a shorter reach will install the base closer to the cockpit than paddlers with a longer reach. Sail rig base location will vary, depending on distance from seat to front of cockpit combing. Use a paddle-leash.

If different sized paddlers sail the same craft, we recommend using the removable base – Part 221. The base can be located in various positions to accommodate reach of different paddlers.

Sail rig base type depends on whether the paddler chooses a fixed base or a removable base.

The locking-base – part 941 – comes with the sail rig and can be shaped to fix most hard-shell kayak decks. The underside of the locking-base can be shaped by taping a piece of medium grit sandpaper to your deck at installation location and working the base back and forth until the underside matches the contour of the deck. The locking-base is then bolted to the deck with the under deck backing plate and provided hardware.

The fixed base plate – part 211 – simplifies installation of the locking-base – part 941 – and requires drilling four ΒΌ” holes and bolting to the deck with the under deck backing plate. The permanent installation is more compact, more solid and permits cable-locking the boat to a secure object. Minor modifications may be required by boat owner to adapt to their boat.

The removable base requires no holes and installs in seconds on smooth-finished hard-shell kayak decks. A light film of a common household lubricant may be required to seal pores of some roto-mold decks, resulting in stronger suction cup adhesion. The base is easily removed from kayak when not required.

Both base styles permit the use of a sail rig, a fishing rod holder or a night-lite.

Canoe Installation

Locate the sail rig in front of the paddler handling the sail for ease of access to raise and lower sail. The sail rig base board is clamped to the canoe gunwales and secured with the provided web straps to a thwart or yoke.

Locate the sail rig baseboard and boat’s gear so the paddler in charge of the sail has clear access. If a thwart or yoke is not in the preferred location to secure sail rig base, the boat owner may install another thwart to accommodate preferred sail rig base location.
